Simply moisten a cotton ball with water and cover it with baking soda. Place the cotton ball on the area to temporarily relieve a toothache. Or try mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with warm water and swish it around as a mouth rinse. 2. Oil Pulling Oil pulling – or swishing therapy – is an efficient way to treat several oral problems, like infections, gingivitis, and bleeding gums. It’s suggested to swish with coconut oil because it contains both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. For best results, do this first thing in the morning before you’ve eaten or drank anything. You’ll swish about one tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes – yes, 20 minutes – before spitting it out. Then, rinse with warm water and brush your teeth. Do this twice a day to relieve a toothache. 3. Clove Oil Clove is an excellent essential oil for relieving any dental pain. It contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic that’s great for numbing nerves. But because of its potency, you have to be careful with how you use it. Avoid pouring the oil directly onto the affected area. Instead, place a couple of drops onto a cotton ball and put it on your tooth. Or you can add a drop of clove essential oil to your oil pulling routine. Use this oil about three or four times a day. 4. Ginger-Cayenne Combo Because of its ability to reduce swelling and inflammation, ginger can be an immediate pain reliever. Cayenne also works well because its main chemical component, capsaicin, can help keep messages of pain from reaching your brain. Make a paste of these two pain relievers. Mix one teaspoon of powdered ginger with water and one teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Swish a cotton ball around in the paste to cover it, and apply the cotton ball to your tooth. Leave the cotton ball on your tooth for a few minutes. Be careful to keep it on your tooth only as this combo can irritate the gums. 5. Oregano Oil Oregano oil is another potent essential oil that can temporarily relieve a toothache. With antiseptic and analgesic properties, oregano oil is effective in reducing pain and swelling. It’s known for its chemical makeup that kills bacteria responsible for causing pain. Use a Q-tip to apply oregano oil to your tooth. You don’t need much oregano oil for it to be effective. 6. Olive Oil Phenolic compounds give olive oil anti-inflammatory properties that will help reduce your pain and swelling. Dip a cotton ball in olive oil and place it over your tooth a few times a day. 7. Onion While the idea of sucking on a raw onion might not sound appetizing, your teeth will thank you. Onions can kill germs responsible for causing a toothache, and they can help relieve your pain. Place a small piece of onion over your tooth for a few minutes twice a day. The onion will attack the germs allowing you to relieve your toothache.   8. Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil can penetrate into your gums and help numb your nerves causing your toothache. Add tea tree oil to a glass of water and use it as a mouth rinse a few times a day to relieve a toothache. 9. Sip Some Tea Tannins in tea can help reduce swelling and pain. Peppermint tea especially both tastes good and provides pain relief. Steep one teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for about twenty minutes. Does the Food You Eat Cause Bad Breath? The first stages of digestion take place in your mouth.  Eating foodstuffs with strong flavors like garlic and onions can lead to bad breath. If you eat too much meat and not enough fruit and vegetables, you may find you have “dog’s breath” even if you brush your teeth often. Bad odors from food won’t go away until digestion is complete. Among those are the dreaded ones spoken by your dentist. “You have a cavity.” “You need a crown.” “You have gingivitis.” Or perhaps, the most dreaded of all: “You need a root canal.” For many reasons, root canals are perhaps the most feared in the dental world. Not only can they be expensive, but also they require Novocain and a good deal of pain relievers afterward. While some root canals require complete removal and implantation of the tooth, others can be saved. Knowing the signs that signal a root canal can help save you from unnecessary time, pain, and money. Tooth Sensitivity To some degree, as we grow older, we experience some level of tooth sensitivity. This is due in large part to our enamel growing weaker and exposing our teeth to the outer elements. Things like coffee, acidic food and drink, and not brushing with the proper toothbrush (hard bristles can do more damage than good) can lead to weakened enamel. However, while some sensitivity is normal, a lot of sensitivity is not. Typically, your teeth will be more prone to reacting to cold foods and drinks. When your teeth start reacting to warm then you have reason for concern. Additionally, if you’re sensitivity is concentrated to one specific tooth you’ll want to see a doctor immediately. Gum Pimples Yes, canker sores are actually fairly common and can be caused by acid or hot liquids. However, they are not the same thing as gum pimples. Gum pimples are similar to regular pimples in that they are caused by a buildup of bacteria beneath the skin that try to exit via the skin. In the case of an injured tooth, the bacteria are caused by the infection in the tooth’s pulp. This in turn forms small white bumps along the gum-line that is similar to pimples on your skin. Take care to notice whether the pimples form in a specific area, are reoccurring, or are accompanied by any other side effects that may point you toward needing a root canal. Tooth Discoloration To be fair, tooth discoloration can be caused by a number of things. Namely, coffee, soda, and tea are prime causes of tooth discoloration in the common person. Not to mention, as you become older and the enamel on your teeth wears down, it becomes easier and easier to see your tooth become discolored. However, when your tooth becomes yellowed and discolored suddenly and is significantly different than your teeth, you should be concerned. But what are wisdom teeth? Chances are if you’ve made it through puberty, you’ve heard the phrase pop up in your dentist office a time or two. Even then, it’s more than likely that you’ve gone through the uncomfortable procedure of having them removed. Wisdom teeth are molars that are deep below the gum line and do not grow in until the rest of your teeth have already settled into place. This often times causes problems because your mouth is incapable of accommodating the new teeth. Your dentist will be well versed in the art of wisdom tooth-ery, but even then it’s helpful to have an understanding of what it is your dentist is looking for when making his decision about wisdom teeth removal. Your dentist will closely examine your x-rays to see the path that your new wisdom teeth will follow as they break through the gum barrier. If they see that the wisdom tooth is a threat to the present teeth, then wisdom teeth removal may be recommended to prevent further damage. Jaw Issues Not all wisdom teeth will grow straight up. In fact, most wisdom teeth will come in at an angle because they must push through the already strong barrier of teeth your mouth has formed. This in turn, when left untreated, leads to infections forming, also called abscesses. These abscesses are serious forms of bacteria that build up and can threaten not just the wisdom tooth, but the teeth around it as well. If your dentist notices that your wisdom tooth has shifted and will threaten the jaw, they will send you to a specialist who handles wisdom teeth removal. Tooth Decay Your wisdom tooth might pop up on its own without pushing too much out of the way. If this is the case, you might be thinking you’re out of the woods and that you won’t need to worry about wisdom teeth extraction. While this is sometimes true, it very rarely is the case. Because your mouth is a confined space, without any room for stretching, you’re likely to see an issue with your oral hygiene the more that your wisdom teeth grow in. The further back your wisdom teeth are, the more likely it is that you’ll do a less than great job getting them totally clean. You probably think that you’ve heard it all when it comes to your oral health. But did you know that oral hygiene plays a bigger role in your health than you give it credit for? There’s a reason that doctors anddentists recommend dental check ups every six months. Actually, there are three reasons: It’s cost effective You’ll get a prettier smile Better overall health However, with something like 40% of the population foregoing frequent dentist visits, it’s no wonder that their oral health has gone down the drain. The problem, it seems, stems from a fear that the dentist will catch onto our bad habits. Things like forgetting to floss on a daily basis, only brushing once a day, and indulging in too many sugary treats are fodder for cavities and plaque buildup. So, how do we—the patients—go about prepping for our visits and feel confident going into our appointments? Take a look at these 5 things you should pay attention to in order to give yourself the best dentist appointment possible. Brush Regularly As mentioned above, many people forego the necessary two-three times daily and instead stick to the minimum. While brushing at least once a day is always a good idea, brushing too little increases your plaque buildup and allows cavities to form. It also increases your risk for gingivitis and halitosis (bad breath syndrome). In any case, if you want to keep your dentist from jumping down your throat—and only poking around in it (haha), then be sure to monitor your brushing habits. The more you brush, the more likely you are to see an improvement in your oral hygiene. Take care to brush the recommended amount, however, as brushing too much can wear down the enamel in your teeth, causing damage as well. Consider, if you will, the advice made popular by teen magazines back in the 90’s, which recommended brushing your teeth to the length of a popular pop song. This will help guarantee that your brushing is thorough and done long enough to make a real difference in your hygiene. Floss Nightly More than anything, flossing is perhaps the most overlooked part of our dental hygiene routines. Think of the number of times your dentist has called you out on not flossing enough. I’ll bet you argued with them, trying to say that you did in fact do the required flossing. You can’t fool a dentist, however, because they have a direct line into your teeth. Not flossing enough leaves you with swollen gums, built up plaque, and a whole-lotta cavities. It’s recommended that you floss nightly, ridding your mouth of daily food particles that might have been caught between your teeth, which can easily turn into cavities. Take some time immediately following your nightly brushing to quickly floss your teeth, taking care to reach the teeth in the back of your mouth in particular. Remember, it takes twenty-one days to turn something into a routine, which means it should become second nature after only three short weeks. Rinse With Mouthwash Mouthwash is usually seen as something that is suggested and not required. While this may be true, mouthwash should be seen as an extra form of protection against the common problems that can occur in your mouth. Because of mouthwash’s strength, it has the ability to kill as many as 99% of the germs that cause gingivitis after only thirty seconds of swishing. Be careful to only use mouthwash as recommended (once per day) and after you’ve brushed your teeth and shifted around germs that can cause plaque or decay. Using mouthwash regularly will help strengthen your teeth’s enamel, protecting those pearly-whites from decay. Brush the Tongue Like mouthwash, brushing your tongue isn’t something that your dentist will enforce, but rather something they will encourage. Brushing your tongue is something that should be done with great care, as reaching too far back may trigger your gag reflex, and/or cause you to hurt your uvula (that thing that hangs in the back of your throat). After you’ve brushed your teeth, give your tongue a gentle swipe to help keep it clean and free from bacteria. If you’re experiencing stubborn halitosis or frequently experience a bad taste in your mouth, then you might benefit from brushing your tongue. In any case, calm your nerves about your bad breath and make brushing your tongue a habit. Watch Your Diet It’s no surprise that things like candy and an increased sugar intake can cause cavities to form. But things like too-hard French fries, toffee, and chewing gum can have just a big a detriment on your teeth’s enamel. Be careful about what you’re putting into your mouth. Even scrounging at the bottom of a French fry container and coming up with a crispy fry can crack a tooth, while toffee and chewing gum can pull out crowns and loose fillings. Not to mention, chewing sugary gum constantly leaves your teeth with a layer of sugar to fight off lest it form a cavity.
